Sandy Orsten

I am a long time resident of the City of Calgary now retired from 36 years of teaching mathematics in both junior and senior high schools  in the public system and at the private school Strathcona Tweedsmuir.  While in Singapore for the last two years of my teaching career I came in contact with the procedure of batiking.  Although I never had the opportunity to take classes to learn about this artistic method, when I returned to Calgary I started to experiment with batiking.  I began with a focus on flowers, especially orchids, but have since moved into scenery, human figures and some more abstract ideas. I am experimenting with this process on both fabrics like silk as well as assorted kinds of papers including mulberry.

Having only an opportunity to take one or two classes during my university degrees, I did some oriental painting classes but have only recently began to paint seriously now that I am retired.  I have been happily married for 42 years and have two sons, a daughter in law and three grandsons.

I am continiously amazed by your talent in this style of painting. I love you new additions, the quilting patterns. What a novel idea!
